Point Reyes Books presents:

Bolinas environmental lawyer and vegetarian-turned-cattle-rancher Nicolette Hahn Niman at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, at a special dinner featuring BN Ranch grass-fed beef as part of a multi-course meal prepared by the chefs at Saltwater Oyster Depot in Inverness. Niman will answer questions and speak about the ideas in her new book, Defending Beef: The Case for Sustainable Meat Production.

Nicolette Hahn Niman is an attorney, writer, livestock rancher, and mother. Much of her time is spent speaking and writing about the problems resulting from industrialized food production. Previously, she was Senior Attorney for the environmental organization Waterkeeper Alliance, and, before that, an attorney for National Wildlife Federation. She lives in Bolinas with her two sons, and husband, Bill Niman, founder of Niman Ranch, a natural meat company supplied by a network of over 700 traditional farmers and ranchers. Together Bill and Nicolette founded the meat company BN Ranch, which offers grass-fed beef, grass-fed lamb, and heritage turkeys.

In her latest book, Niman explains that the impact of grazing can be either negative or positive, depending on how livestock are managed. Grounding her findings in empirical scientific data, she makes the case that with proper oversight, livestock can actually play an important role in maintaining grassland ecosystems by performing the same functions as the natural herbivores that once roamed and grazed there.

About BN Ranch: BN Ranch can trace its roots back to 1977 when Bill Niman purchased 200 acres in Bolinas, California, to raise cattle in a traditional manner, learning the craft from some of the region’s great ranching families. In 2007 Bill Niman left his namesake company to start something new. Soon Bill, together with his wife, Nicolette, and their partners launched their BN Ranch which is committed to offering sustainably and humanely raised meats with no compromises.

About Marin Organic:  Marin Organic partners with local farms to promote organic agriculture, provide food system education, and increase access to fresh produce for people in need. It provides marketing support for member farmers and helps them build relationships with local businesses. In turn, member farms provide both the locations for our education programs and the extra food harvested for hunger relief organizations
